The HIstory of Our FIrm

The Hart family has provided Southern Illinois residents with legal representation since 1887, when William H. Hart founded the firm. Mr. Hart built the firm’s current building, directly across from the Franklin County Courthouse in 1906, where it remains to this day.

William H. Hart practiced law in the firm with his sons, Marion M. Hart and William W. Hart. Those sons continued the firm with their sons, William W. Hart, Jr. and Richard O. Hart, respectively, in 1954.  Murphy C. Hart, Richard’s son, has been carrying on the family legacy since 1983.

Over the 130 years the firm has been in existence, other attorneys have come and gone while serving the firm and our community in an exemplary manner. Their contributions have not gone unnoticed as they have helped the Hart family to forge a great tradition of providing legal services to Southern Illinois residents. The Hart family has taken a great deal of pride in serving the people of Southern Illinois, and they look forward to that tradition continuing well into the future.  Jonathan and Jennifer will proudly carry on the Hart legacy thanks to the invaluable experience, efforts, and teachings of Murphy.
